Drift Innovations HD170 video camera for motorcycles

For you guys who like to record your motorcycle journeys there is a new HD camera in the marketplace that may be worth looking at. Drift Innovation has released the new HD170. It offers 1080p and a 170-degree filed of view. Similar specs to the GoPro HD. The things that give it an advantage are the 300-degree rotating lens and most important, a side mounted lcd screen that will help you set up the camera.  Another advantage of the camera is an integrated remote control, so you can start and stop recording on the fly.  With the GoPro HD one is required to get off of the motorcycle to stop recording if the camera is mounted in a location that is not easily accessible.

The list price for the HD170 is $330, I purchased the GoPro HD for $220. So, if money is no object for roughly $110 you can get the rotating lens and a viewing screen. Right now I’m happy with my camera, but I am anxious to see some video from the HD170.

Drift Innovation has revealed a new sport action camera, the HD170, that can record 1080p videos and has a 170-degree wide-angle lens. The lens will also rotate across a 300-degree range, and a side-mounted LCD screen will let users frame their shot with the camera mounted on the side of a helmet or vehicle, for example.

There is otherwise a night-shooting mode, along with an RF remote control for triggering or stopping the recording functionality. The HD170 can also be put into a continuous photo mode, where a shot is taken every few seconds until the storage space runs out. It shoots 5-megapixel photos, and there is just 32MB of built-in memory. Most recording takes place on SDHC cards up to 32GB.

While an internal microphone is standard, an external microphone is offered for eliminating wind noise when the camera is mounted on the outside of vehicles or other fast-moving objects. The camera is also water resistant up to nearly two feet.

The HD170 ships late in July, priced at $330.

We have been testing this camera for about 3 weeks and it works brilliantly. Video quality excellent (pretty much all of them are now) but the LCD screen and remote control seal the deal. Also nice form factor and mounts. Sample vid from Isle of Man
