Sport Touring Motorcycles – Which is the fastest?

Since I recently got a Yamaha FJR1300 I thought it would be interesting to compare the speed and horse power tests for the major Sport Touring bikes on the road today.

The bikes I consider the true Sport Touring bikes right now are the Yamaha FJR1300, Kawasaki Concours, BMW K1600, and the Honda ST 1300. I just got a recent issue of Motorcycle Consumer News and I thought I would share some of the results from their performance index. The performance index lists hundreds of different bikes but I wanted to focus on the bikes in my mental wheel house right now, the Sport Touring models.

Model MSRP Engine HP Weight MPG Top Speed 0-60 0-100 1/4 Mile
2012 BMW K 1600GT
$20,900 i-6 133.9 703 37.9 134.3 3.10 9.18 11.75
Honda ST 1300
$18,230 V-4 106.1 727 43.7 144 3.49 8.62 11.47
Kawasaki Concours
$15,299 I-4 135.57 689.5 43.3 152.3 3.14 7.10 10.82
Yamaha FJR1300
$15,190 I-4 121.46 662 44.8 146.2 3.30 7.71 11.14

My FJR is not the fastest, but when you combine the power to weight ratio, comfortable ride, and smooth handling…it is one nice ride.

    Triumph Sprint ST:
    MSRP: 13,399
    Engine: 1050 cc Triple
    HP: 128 bhp
    Torque: 80 (6300 rpm)
    Weight: 590
I think the big negative on this bike is that the range sucks (about 200 miles) because of the tiny tank.

    Hey cntzero,

Yeah the Sprint ST is another good option. I just don’t think I have ever seen one on the road. I wonder how many Triumph has sold in the states?

Are you an ST rider? Or in the market?

I was in the market for a while to buy one after a careful review of all the Sport/Touring bikes. I got very very close on a sweet used bike but backed out at the last moment. I am not sure of the numbers but I see quite a few of them here in Texas. I think however I am leaning more towards the adventure bikes for my next purchase. I am looking at the KTM 950 Adventure and also the Triumph 800 XC. I think the KTM is winning me over because of its better load capacity and power (I do a lot of 2 up riding). I have considered the BMW 1200GS adventure but man that is such a monster bike.
    Cheers…

OH, forgot, I currently ride a Triumph Speed Triple and a KLR 650 Tengai.

I like the speed triple…Nice looking bike!
