This is one of my favorite bikes I have ridden in a while.  It was a real pleasure to do the Yamaha FJ-09 review. If I was in the market for a mid-sized sport touring bike the FJ-09 would be at the top of my list.

The FJ-09 is Yamaha’s middleweight sport touring / road based adventure styled bike.  It has the same engine as the Yamaha FZ-09 and the XSR-900.

You have three flavors of the Yamaha 847cc 3 cylinder engine to choose from the naked bike FZ-09 that retails for $8,100, the classic looking XSR-900 that retails for about $10,000 and the sport touring FJ-09 for $10,500.

All are built off the same fantastic inline 847cc 3 cylinder. The FJ-09 also offers traction control and ABS over the FZ-09 along with a more comfortable riding position.

To say I loved the engine on this bike is an understatement. This bike is a BLAST to ride and is tuned perfectly for the streets it has tons of torque, the perfect amount of top end acceleration and it sounds great even with the stock exhaust. I have a Yamaha FZ-07 right now and I love that bike but riding this engine had me looking to see what used prices for the FZ-09 and FJ-09 were on Craigslist.

The FJ-09 falls in the same category as the Triumph Tiger 800 or the Kawasaki Versys or Suzuki V-Strom. I have ridden the Tiger 800 and the V-Strom and I would take the FJ-09 over the others any day of the week. I thought the triple was good on the Tiger 800 until I rode this bike. Yamaha has a great platform and I am glad to see they are adding different flavors of that platform with the FZ-09, XSR900 and FJ-09.

In fact I liked the engine in this bike better than the 1200cc engine in my Super Tenere. I just hate messing with a chain driven bike for my daily rider and for longer trips.
